No bad blood? JD Vance congratulates Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce on engagement (Exclusive)

Vice President JD Vance put aside his bad blood with Taylor Swift in an exclusive interview with USA TODAY and congratulated the mega-celebrity on her engagement to three-time Super Bowl winner Travis Kelce.

Still, Vance probably won't be exchanging friendship bracelets with the Grammy-winning singer or Kansas City Chiefs tight end anytime soon.

He told USA TODAY in a sit-down on the White House grounds that he still thinks athletes, singers and other prominent people should stick to their own professions.

"I think by and large, people want politicians to focus on politics, and they want celebrities to focus on whatever it is that made them famous, whether it's singing or dancing or acting," Vance said.

The vice president told USA TODAY he's still rooting for the couple, who announced their engagement Aug. 26 after two years of dating.

"I'm a romantic when I see two people who are in love getting married," Vance said. "I just wish 'em the best, and I congratulate 'em, and I hope they have a very long and healthy and happy life together."

President Donald Trump shared warm wishes for the couple shortly after they announced their engagement, shaking off his longtime feud with the "The Life of a Showgirl" singer.

"I wish them a lot of luck," Trump told reporters. "I think he’s a great player, I think he’s a great guy. I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck."

Swift publicly endorsed Trump’s Democratic opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, during the 2024 presidential race after video surfaced of Vance lamenting the country being run "by a bunch of childless cat ladies."

She later mocked Vance's disparaging remark in her endorsement announcement, signing the message as a proud "childless cat lady."

Swift’s Harris endorsement wasn't the first time she's publicly talked politics. The musician also endorsed former President Joe Biden and Harris in 2020, and she’s said she regrets not getting involved in the 2016 presidential race.

Swift, in her 2020 documentary “Miss Americana,” also knocked Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee, calling her “Trump in a wig.”

Some of Swift’s presence in American politics hasn’t been voluntary. Conservative conspiracy theories swirled last year that Swift was part of a Pentagon plot fueled by Democrats to sway the 2024 election. Others falsely alleged her relationship with Kelce is a PR effort to boost the Chiefs, or the NFL as a whole.
