- - Former bandmate recounts Ozzy Osbourne's 'beautiful' private funeral

Robert Trujillo, a onetime bandmate of Ozzy Osbourne, is sharing details from the Prince of Darkness' funeral.

A bassist for Metallica, Trujillo played in Osbourne's solo band from 1996 to 2003 and was present at a private ceremony honoring the rocker in his native Birmingham, England. Osbourne died July 22 at 76 from a heart attack.

"It was a small group of people but it was very, very beautiful," Trujillo, 60, told host Eddie Trunk during an Aug. 7 episode of the "Trunk Nation" podcast. "It was very sad, but at the same time, some of the speeches were, as you could imagine, pretty funny. People sharing stories, and all of a sudden there's laughter, and 'I remember this, I remember that.' It felt like there was closure from this."

Trujillo also revealed that, while the start of the ceremony was clouded by rain, the "sun actually came out" periodically, particularly during an "amazing eulogy," delivered by Geezer Butler, the bassist and lyricist for Black Sabbath, Osbourne's most famous band.

"The sun actually came out, and then it was beautiful from that moment on. A very magical moment," Trujillo added, revealing that Kelly Osbourne, the late rocker's famous daughter, performed her father's 1991 song "Mama, I'm Coming Home," at the funeral.

Osbourne died just weeks after reuniting with Black Sabbath for a final show in England. A family statement shared with USA TODAY at the time said the legendary rocker had been "surrounded by love" before his death.

"It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy has passed away this morning," the statement read. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time."

He left behind Sharon Osbourne, his wife of more than 40 years, as well as daughters Jessica, Aimee and Kelly and sons Elliot, Louis and Jack.

Osbourne was one of the most iconic figures in rock, molding the sound and perception of heavy metal with his one-of-a-kind voice and shocking antics. He followed his rock zenith with a reality TV career, making him as well known for biting the head off a bat on stage as his bemusing bickering at home with his wife and kids.
